The Backbone of the Farm

Row Crop Power

Row crop tractors are the versatile heavy-hitters of modern agriculture. Designed primarily to navigate narrow rows without damaging crops, these machines balance substantial horsepower with adjustable track widths and high ground clearance.

Precision and Power

In the 140 to 400 horsepower range, these tractors must handle primary tillage on one day and delicate precision planting on the next. The defining characteristics of a row crop tractor include:

  • Adjustable Axles: Front and rear axles that can be slid or adjusted to fit varying row spacings (e.g., 20-inch, 30-inch, or 36-inch rows).
  • High Hydraulic Capacity: Twin-flow hydraulic pumps capable of delivering 40 to 85+ gallons per minute to run vacuum planters and hydraulic motors.
  • Advanced Transmissions: PowerShift and Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT/IVT) that allow for exact speed matching regardless of engine RPM.

Ballast and Weight Transfer

Because they lack the sheer mass of articulated 4WDs, row crop tractors rely heavily on intelligent ballasting. Cast-iron wheel weights and front suitcase weights must be meticulously calculated. Too light, and the tractor experiences power hop and wheel slip; too heavy, and soil compaction ruins crop yields.
